Webhosting…

February 21st, 2009 Posted in Technology, Thoughts, Website

I have been thinking recently about shifting where this site is stored, also about getting a decent domain for it!

At the moment it is on the free hosting that comes with my brother’s broadband connection (a throwback to being in Antrim!). I had hoped I could move it to Biglobe’s space but it doesn’t support php or DBs unfortunately.
I can buy a package from F2S for £25/year and flat3d.net for £12/year (or flat3d.co.uk for £7.50/year, but that doesn’t seem to be right when I am in Japan!)

The space is pretty minimal (200mb w/10mb database) but it is the same as I am working with now…
Can anyone suggest a decent host (not too pricey and supporting php/providing db)?

answers on a postcard… or just comment below…

I haven’t got much knowledge of this sort of thing, but here’s the site that they use in work to arrange client domain names etc…

    http://www.123-reg.co.uk/

Had a quick look at it and the prices seem pretty good.

    Hope this is useful.

I use ukwsd.com – they’re a UK based host, similar prices to your above quotes, but provide much more and are very reliable!

    Hey Jonny,
123-reg specialize in domain management, their webhosting is fairly (…very…) basic…

Matthew, ukwsd look pretty good! certainly a step up in provision, but also double the price (unless it is 3 months free every year on yearly subscription…?)

I managed a site hosted on 8hosting.com for several years, and I never had any problems. They have good customer service (i.e. they actually write back), and keep things cheap compared to what you get. They cannot register your site, but you could do that at GoDaddy or somesuch.

8hosting does indeed seem to be very good value…

But I think ukwsd has pipped it to the post in bandwidth (like I need it), config options, extra guff that I’ll never use etc etc! You know how it is…

I’m off to do some registering and such like! How exciting!

Ah yes, prices are a bit more than I remembered, but still the best value I’ve found. And that yearly price continues.
