So I haven’t had a call from Maplin and the week is up. The guy told me he would call me either way within a week, but haven’t heard a peep. So I am still looking around for a part-time job. I think I would much rather work in a local PC shop than Maplin anyways, appart from commuting into belfast, the smaller more personal store would be a much nicer working environment and would probably offer much more of an opportunity to do a wider range of things.
I sent an application to DS Computers a store in Kells (near Antrim). It looks like a pretty nice shop, lots of stuff going on at it etc.
In other news PC and I went surfing on Saturday, was the first time I’d been out surfing in an actual kayak in months. The surf was decent enough and we caught a good few decent waves… My left side bracing needs a lot of work before I’ll be needing my roll less. I also couldn’t find my nose clip (found it since getting back) so I had the bending nose drip thing for an evening! Yuck… All in all a great afternoon though!
I also fixed my car door all by myself with the help of my dremel type tool thingy, PC’s drill and part of an old hinge I had in the garage. Pretty please with that, it’s held up so far!
Yes folks! It’s an update! It’s going to be fast and fragmented though…
I went to the interview and Maplin was in some kind of chaos as it was the managers first day, he didn’t know that I was coming for an interview. So after a bit of a wait he was free to see me and it was a 15 minute affair with only some basic questions that he could come up with at 0 minutes notice! At the end he basically said that if the rota has space for me then I can work there if not then I can’t… Which is a decent result, but my restricted availablility will probably be a bit of a hindrance there.
In other job related news the HR woman from First Trust called me to tell me they don’t have any jobs that I can do. I wasn’t in, however, so my mum answered and asked if she could take a message but they wouldn’t tell her that, they had to tell me personally…
The past day or so I haven’t been feeling too great, all started yesterday with stomach pains of some kind that then kept me up quite a bit of the night, I still don’t feel 100% but more down to lack of sleep at the moment really!
On Tuesday I got the train and wasn’t much impressed… while the train takes 40 minutes but rush hour traffiic takes about an hour, the train leaves at 7:50, which means leaving the house before 7:40 for a 9am class then a half hour wait at the other end, as opposed to 8ish in the car. But it does mean no stress, and blame free travel, as I found out today when I left before 9 for my 10 o’clock class to find traffic still backed beyond Templepatrick at Sandyknowes on the M2… I made it in 25 minutes late to my class, which was fortunately a 2 hour class so Patton was still winding up! Perhaps I’ll get the slightly later train on Wednesdays, then if I’m late I can blame NIR!
College is getting quite interesting and I’ve been having all kinds of interesting thoughts lately, mostly actually in noting the similarities between the troubles that exist for Christians in our modern world and the troubles that existed for the BC Israelites and the early Christians… Also we are studying the Old Testament and looking at what exactly it is and what evidence there is to support it and give us clues to what kind of literature it was intended to be etc… I was gonna type more about it, but my brain is feeling quite fried at the moment!
I got a call today from the good folks at Maplin Electronics telling me they received my application forms and want me to go for an interview on Monday at 4pm. It’s been a long time since I have done a job interview, I need to think of ambiguous yet impressive answers to questions like “How do you deal with difficult customers?” and “Why do you think you deserve this job?”.
I’m a little worried though, I printed a generic form and sent it off with the desire to work part-time indicated clearly by ticking the part time box and putting “Max:20″ in the number of hours available a week slot. Then a few days later found there was an opening at the Belfast store for a couple of full time positions. So hopefully I’m not gonna get there and then get told to go home again cos I am only interested in part time work!
If you are someone who prays, some prayer would be appreciated. That God might use this to provide for me at Bible College or that He would provide another way. Thanks!
This weekend was fairly busy. On friday I spent the day helping prepare for the OMF Conference in Castle Erin up in Portrush.
Last night was RUSH (R U Serving Him, I didn’t make it up, but perhaps we should as ourselves more often…)
There was a guy there to speak about homosexuality. Now this is a sensitive issue and I honestly have only ever once heard a Christian speak biblically on it with any real kind of personal experience and that was a download from Veritas (found here). so it was quite interesting.
The speaker approached the topic from the popular viewpoint, he sought out media relating to homosexuality, the more shocking the better, told some stories of being caught up in a gay pride campaign and then went on to quote how the bible says that its a damnable offence. Thankfully towards the end he pointed out that while it’s sin, so are lots of things and we are guilty too.
But in all of it I couldn’t help thinking there was too much emphasis on what we know, ie that homosexual activity is sin, and not enough on what we are forgetting, that adultery, and this includes premarital sex and even lustful thoughts from Jesus’ bar raising in the sewrmon on the mount, are sexual sins also and fall under the same umbrella. Practising homosexuals were to be put to death in OT times, but so were adulterers. And we know and thank God for the approach Jesus took when the pharisees brought the adultress to him to be stoned and we must follow his commands in how we treat people due to their sexual sin. But they (and we in our sin) must follow Jesus’ command to go and sin no more, an often overlooked part of the passage.
All in all when we are deciding how to treat homosexual people we must basically treat them as anyone who is sinning sexually, if we treat them differently from a guy who is off out to try and get laid every weekend then we are being hypocritical.
In the end we need to take a no nonsense approach to sin, but not one sin rather than another. We also need to take a loving approach to people and there should not be anything that can get in the way of that. We are all people made in God’s image and we need to remember that.
