So….

July 23rd, 2005 Posted in Uncategorized

I’m back from Candidate’s Course and have so many little things to clear up before I go to Japan. I even have to make a will!

Right how I am watching Lost in Translation, It’s a movie I quite like, I think its the closest equivalent to my taste in music in movie form; easy, relaxing and ever so gently thought provoking. Though most of my friends don’t like it, but perhaps that’s down to my experience or further insight…

Anyway my point was that in 3 weeks and 2 days I will be there, alone in Japanese society. Unable to speech the language other than to perform the most basic of tasks.
It sounds kind of scary to put it that way, but also very, very exciting…

    i loved lost in translation!

recommended it to a few people, who went to see it on my recommendation, hated it, and proceeded to moan to me about it.

decided not to recommend any more movies to anyone.

Yeah… I saw it in the cinema with a friend then told everyone it was great, they watched it when it came out to rent and then blamed their lack of taste on me!

I am one of those who didn’t enjoy “Lost In Translation”. I appreciated the artistry in making the audience feel jet-lagged and lethargic like the leading character, but I really didn’t enjoy it. :(

It didn’t make me feel jetlagged or lethargic. It was just the movie equivalent of lying in a dimmed room with some Norah Jones or Jack Johnson on…

Relaxing; carrying you along and into the movie without much thought or effort or gay effects…
Just excellent direction and gentle plot movement.

I also loved how the leading lady came to the east to ”find herself” in Zen Buddhism and found it as empty as her life at home. Rather than the standard finding yourself thing. Bit more realistic and true to life.

But I think a lot of what I liked is linked to my experience and view of Japan. And my preferences in general. I think you need to be in a Jack Johnson frame of mind to begin with too…
